Created in the Image of God: The Value of Every Human Life

When a Story Breaks Your Heart

There are moments when a story stops you in your tracks and leaves you carrying it long after you’ve put down your phone. Recently, I came across a story that broke my heart. As I sat with my thoughts and emotions, I found myself returning again and again to the same truth found in the opening pages of Scripture:

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.

Those words are simple, yet they carry profound meaning. Every human life has value because every human life bears the image of God.

The Faces I Think Of

As someone who works in special education, I spend my days surrounded by children who are often defined by labels and diagnoses. I understand why assessments, medical information, and educational plans exist. They serve a purpose. Yet what I see every day reminds me that no diagnosis has the power to define a person’s worth.

When people talk about disabilities, I do not think of statistics. I think of faces. I think of children I have known and loved. The students who laugh until they can barely catch their breath. I think of children who become frustrated when something is difficult and beam with pride when they finally succeed. Children who love deeply, trust completely, and celebrate victories that many people would overlook.

I do not see diagnoses.

I see children.

More Than a Diagnosis

The world often evaluates people according to what they can do. We admire intelligence, athletic ability, beauty, achievement, and independence. Human value is frequently measured by productivity and performance. The problem with that way of thinking is that it places worth on something that can be gained or lost.

A diagnosis can describe a challenge. It can explain a need. It can help guide treatment or support. What it cannot do is determine a person’s value.

Every child is more than a diagnosis. Every person is more than a medical chart, an assessment score, or a label. Behind every diagnosis is a unique individual with thoughts, emotions, relationships, gifts, and purpose.

Created in the Image of God

Scripture teaches something entirely different from the message often communicated by our culture. Our value does not come from our abilities. It does not come from our accomplishments. It does not come from our health, our education, our appearance, or our independence. Our value comes from the One who created us.

From the moment God formed humanity, He set us apart from the rest of creation. We were made in His image. That truth applies equally to the strong and the weak, the healthy and the sick, the wealthy and the poor, the neurotypical and the neurodivergent. Every person who has ever lived bears the imprint of their Creator. Genesis 1:27 reminds us that human worth is not earned. It is given by God.

The Source of Human Worth

If our value comes from intelligence, then those with greater intelligence have more worth. Then those with greater ability have more worth. If our value comes from independence, then those who need assistance have less worth.

Yet Scripture rejects all of these ideas. Human worth is rooted in something far more secure. It is rooted in the fact that God created us in His image. Because of that, every human life possesses equal dignity and value regardless of age, ability, health, achievement, or circumstance.

That truth changes everything.

Seeing People Through God’s Eyes

When Jesus walked this earth, He consistently demonstrated the value of those whom society often overlooked. He touched lepers when others avoided them. Jesus welcomed children when others dismissed them. He spent time with people whom society considered insignificant. Again and again, Jesus showed that human dignity is not determined by social status, ability, or usefulness.

Many people look at a disability and see limitations. God sees a person. Many people look at weakness and see less value. God sees someone He loves. Many people focus on what a person cannot do. God sees someone created intentionally and purposefully in His image. As followers of Christ, we are called to see people the way He sees them.

Every Life Matters

Working with children who have special needs has taught me lessons I could not have learned anywhere else. They have taught me patience, perseverance, and joy. They have taught me that the things our culture often values most are not necessarily the things God values most.

Some of the most loving, joyful, and genuine people I have ever known have been children with disabilities. Their lives, stories, and contributions matter. Most importantly, they matter because God says they do.

The next time you encounter someone whom the world may overlook, remember Genesis 1:27. Remember that you are looking at someone who bears the image of God. In every diagnosis is a person. Behind every struggle is a soul. These are people deeply loved by their Creator.

May we learn to see people the way God sees them. May we recognize the dignity He has placed within every human life. And may we never forget that our worth is not determined by what we can do, but by whose image we bear.

Prayer

Father, thank You for creating each person in Your image. Help us to see others through Your eyes rather than through the labels and limitations the world assigns. Teach us to recognize the value, dignity, and worth You have placed within every human life. Give us hearts that reflect Your compassion and truth. May we honor You in the way we speak about, care for, and love those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
