Sunday Devotional: Discovering Who You Are in Christ

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” — Ephesians 1:3–5 (NIV)

Each morning, before the sun rises, I curl up in my big cozy chair with a warm mug of coffee and an open Bible. It’s my sacred space—just me, God, and the stillness. Some mornings I feel strong. Other days, I come with a tired heart—frustrated by work stress, lonely in motherhood, or overwhelmed by the silence of unanswered prayers. But every time I open to the book of Ephesians, I’m reminded of who I am in Christ. And in that quiet, God meets me with truth.

Ephesians: A Letter for the Worn and the Waiting

The Apostle Paul wrote Ephesians from prison—not from a platform of comfort, but from confinement. That’s one of the reasons I love this letter. It speaks into tight places—seasons of confusion, financial strain, parenting heartache, and spiritual exhaustion. Paul didn’t write to impress; he wrote to encourage the weary with identity and purpose.

His central message? God’s eternal plan is unfolding, and you—yes, you—have a place in it. Not because of what you’ve done, but because of who He says you are.

God Answers Even the Quietest Thoughts

Have you ever had a fleeting thought—I just want to know that I’m still useful or I hope I haven’t missed what God had for me—and then, almost unexpectedly, a reminder shows up? Maybe it’s a verse that jumps off the page during your quiet time. Maybe it’s a sermon, a lyric, or a kind word that speaks directly to the ache you never put into prayer. I’ve experienced moments like that, and each time, I’m reminded that God is listening—even to the unspoken.

Ephesians 3:20 says God can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. His love doesn’t wait for perfectly worded prayers. It moves into our thoughts, our doubts, our questions. And in that space, He gently reminds us: You are mine. You have not been overlooked. You are still a part of My plan.

Trials Are Not Your Identity

There’s been no shortage of hard seasons. I’ve faced rejection, parenting struggles, work discouragement, financial uncertainty, and the ache of loneliness that sneaks in even when I’m not technically alone. Life can make you feel unwanted, unseen, or unqualified.

But Ephesians 1:4–5 tells me I am chosen, holy, and adopted. Not because I’ve earned it—but because He said it. And what God says about you is more powerful than any trial, label, or failure.

Chosen on Purpose

There have been days when I’ve sat in that cozy chair, coffee growing cold, thinking: Everyone has someone but me. I’ve watched friends form tight circles I wasn’t part of. I’ve been the friend people reach out to only when others aren’t available. Even in motherhood, it can feel like your value disappears as your children grow up and choose others first.

But Ephesians 1:11 says we were chosen and predestined according to His will. That means you are not overlooked. You are not Plan B. You were written into God’s story before time began.

Let Ephesians Define You

Here’s a reminder of who you are in Christ, straight from the book of Ephesians:

  • Blessed (1:3)
  • Chosen (1:4)
  • Adopted (1:5)
  • Redeemed (1:7)
  • Forgiven (1:7)
  • Included in Christ (1:13)
  • Sealed with the Holy Spirit (1:13)
  • Alive in Christ (2:4–5)
  • God’s workmanship (2:10)
  • A citizen of heaven (2:19)
  • Loved beyond measure (3:18–19)
  • Strengthened with power (3:16)

These aren’t just affirmations—they’re divine declarations. This identity doesn’t change with your emotions or circumstances. It’s permanent.

From Seated to Standing

Paul lays out a beautiful progression in Ephesians:

  • Chapters 1–3: You are seated with Christ—secure in your identity.
  • Chapters 4–5: You are to walk in a manner worthy of your calling—living differently because of who you are.
  • Chapter 6: You are called to stand—clothed in the armor of God, ready to resist spiritual attack.

You are not defenseless. You are not helpless. God clothes you in strength and equips you for battle.

When You Feel Forgotten

God sees you and never forgets you. God sees the dishes, the homework help, the late-night prayers, and the hidden tears. Yesterday, He watched as you held your child through a meltdown. Quietly, He noticed you show up to work while battling anxiety beneath the surface. Even the disappointment you couldn’t put into words—He saw that too.

Ephesians 2:10 says, “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
God handcrafted you for this season—even when it feels mundane, overlooked, or heavy.

How to Live This Out

  • Pray the prayers in Ephesians over your life and loved ones. (Ephesians 1:17–19 is a powerful place to start.)
  • Speak truth aloud. When lies come, answer with Scripture.
  • Walk in grace. Ephesians 4–6 gives practical guidance for relationships, parenting, and spiritual maturity.
  • Stand with intention. Don’t go into your day unarmed. Put on the armor of God and move forward with confidence.

He’s With You in the Chair

That cozy chair in my living room isn’t just a seat—it’s a sanctuary. A place where I show up empty and leave filled. Where God reminds me of who I am, even when the world tries to say otherwise. Where the Holy Spirit brings clarity, strength, and sometimes just quiet comfort.

Friend, God sees you right where you are. He chose you before your circumstances ever looked perfect. He loves you—fully, completely, and irrevocably.

So tomorrow morning, when you rise early and pour that coffee, remember: God’s already there. Waiting. Watching. Whispering over you, “You are mine.”

Prayer

Father God,
Thank You for meeting me here—before the world wakes, before I even know what the day will hold. In this quiet space, You remind me that I am not who the world says I am. I am who You say I am.

When I feel overlooked, You call me chosen.
When I feel unwanted, You whisper that I am adopted.
When I feel weary, You promise I am strengthened with power through Your Spirit.
When I feel like I don’t belong, You remind me I’m seated in heavenly places with Christ.

Lord, help me hold on to the truth that my worth is not measured by how others treat me, how much I accomplish, or how visible I am. Let me live rooted in grace and built on the foundation of Your Word. Help me walk in a way that reflects Your love—even on the hard days.

Thank You for answering the prayers I never even speak aloud. For the way You hear my thoughts, comfort my spirit, and send encouragement in the most unexpected ways. You see me. You know me. And still, You love me.

Today, I choose to believe the truth of Ephesians. I choose to wear the armor You’ve provided, walk in the calling You’ve given, and trust in the purpose You’re unfolding—even if I can’t see it yet.

Speak louder than the lies.
Shine brighter than the shadows.
Stand taller than my fears.

And when I forget who I am, pull me back into the quiet, into this chair, into Your presence—where my identity is found, secure and unshaken.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
