Moving Forward with Your Life: Trusting God’s Power and Direction

Sitting in my big, cozy chair, coffee in hand, eyes fixed on the fireplace, I was stilled; not by rest, but by uncertainty. I know what it feels like to freeze, unsure of the next step. Those moments came in my marriage when life spun out of my control. They returned when I became a single mom, carrying more questions than answers. And now, here it was again—my degree complete, my career steady yet unsettled, my heart wondering where God might lead me next.

It can feel overwhelming when life calls you forward. Sometimes it’s a sudden change. Other times it’s simply the quiet longing for something new.

There are seasons when my mind races with questions: What will I do? How will I provide? Where do I even start? Uncertainty still shows up, and I freeze. In those times, I lose sight of how far God has already carried me. I forget the doors He has opened, the paths He has prepared, the resources He has provided, and the way He has guided me when I had no idea which way to turn.

But every time, God draws me back to truth: He is the One who strengthens me to take the next step. He is the One who gets the glory.

And that reminder changes everything. Moving forward isn’t about my ability to figure it all out; it’s about trusting His faithfulness, one step at a time.

The Power to Move Forward

Before Paul begins Ephesians 4, he ends chapter 3 with this prayer:

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20–21 NASB95)

This is the foundation for moving forward:

  • God can do more than we ask or imagine.
  • His power is at work in us right now.
  • Our next step isn’t about our ability but His glory.

It’s only after this truth that Paul launches into the opening words of Ephesians 4:

“I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1–3)

Mini-Study: “Walk Worthy of the Calling”

The Greek word for “walk” (peripateō) means to live or conduct your life. Paul’s use here implies movement—progression—rather than standing still. Moving forward isn’t just about making decisions; it’s about living in a way that reflects who you are in Christ.

The “calling” (klēsis) refers to the divine invitation to belong to God and participate in His mission. It’s not just about a specific job or ministry role but your entire identity as His child.

When Paul describes walking “worthy” (axios), he’s talking about living a life that balances the scales; your daily choices reflecting the weight and value of your calling.

And notice the qualities Paul lists: humility, gentleness, patience, love, and unity. These aren’t traits that happen automatically; they are Spirit-formed as we trust God with each step forward.

So moving forward, biblically speaking, isn’t just about where you’re going—it’s about how you walk while you go.

Moving Forward Doesn’t Always Mean Recovering from Tragedy

Sometimes moving forward comes after deep loss or upheaval. But other times, you simply sense God inviting you to step into a new season:

  • A career change
  • A new ministry opportunity
  • A move to a different city
  • Returning to school
  • Learning a new skill
  • Reordering your priorities

The process can feel the same—uncertain, stretching, even scary—but the same God who calls you is the same God who equips you.

Practical Steps for Moving Forward with Your Life

  1. Pray First and Continually
Ask God for clarity and direction. Keep the conversation going as you take steps forward. (James 1:5)
  2. Remember God’s Past Faithfulness
Write down times when God has provided for you, opened doors, or brought you through uncertainty. Let these memories build your faith. (Psalm 77:11)
  3. Clarify Your Next Step—Not Every Step
God often lights the path one step at a time (Psalm 119:105). Focus on the first faithful move you can make.
  4. Stay Rooted in Your Calling
Ephesians 4:1 reminds us that our lives have a God-given calling. Evaluate opportunities based on whether they align with your identity in Christ.
  5. Invite Godly Counsel
Talk with trusted, spiritually mature friends or mentors who can help confirm your direction. (Proverbs 15:22)
  6. Walk in Humility and Gentleness
Change can make us defensive or impatient. Ephesians 4:2–3 reminds us to walk forward in love and peace.
  7. Give God the Glory
Every open door, every resource, every provision—acknowledge it as God’s doing. Gratitude keeps you from relying on yourself. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

What Moving Forward Might Look Like in Your Life

  • Signing up for a class you’ve been afraid to start.
  • Applying for a job you feel underqualified for but sense God leading you toward.
  • Saying yes to a ministry role that stretches you.
  • Rearranging your schedule to prioritize what God is calling you to.
  • Releasing something holding you back from entering the new season.

A Prayer for Moving Forward

Father, You can do far more than I could ever ask or imagine. Your power is at work within me, even when I feel weak or uncertain. Give me the courage to take the next step You’re leading me toward. Help me walk in a way that honors Your calling on my life. Keep me humble, patient, and filled with Your love. And when I look back, let me see every victory as Your doing—so that You alone get the glory. Amen.
