Sunday Devotional: Fire in My Bones

"If I say, ‘I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,’ there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot." - Jeremiah 20:9 (ESV)
The Fire That Won’t Go Out
There are days when we grow tired of showing up. Tired of speaking truth that isn’t received. Tired of standing alone when the crowd seems louder, more persuasive, and less burdened by conscience. Maybe you’ve felt it too—that weariness in doing good, that ache of obedience when it costs more than you thought it would. And yet, like a fire in my bones, the call to remain faithful burns too fiercely to ignore.
Jeremiah, often called the “weeping prophet,” knew that kind of exhaustion. His call from God was clear: to warn Judah of coming judgment, to speak hard truths, and to live as a living signpost of God’s holiness. But it came at a steep price. He was mocked, beaten, imprisoned, and emotionally crushed. In his pain, he tells God he wants to stop. He says, “I will not mention Him anymore.” But then—like a sudden flare—comes the confession: “His word is in my heart like a fire… I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.”
That phrase—”fire in my bones”—burns with urgency, truth, and divine compulsion. Jeremiah wasn’t boasting about boldness. He was admitting defeat—not to people, but to God’s overwhelming presence within him. The Word of the Lord could not be silenced in his heart.
Maybe you’ve tried to set aside your calling, convinced yourself it was time to go quiet, convinced the pain wasn’t worth it anymore. You may have even told yourself that obedience shouldn’t be this lonely. And yet, even in your silence, you feel it—the burning.
God’s call is not about platform, popularity, or ease. It’s about faithfulness.
Your Calling Might Not Be Loud—But It’s Holy
Jeremiah wasn’t speaking to stadiums. He didn’t have a bestseller. He spent much of his ministry lamenting how few listened. But the impact of his obedience echoes through the centuries. Because he did not stay silent, generations have heard God’s voice through his tears.
What Jeremiah teaches us is this: faithfulness in the fire matters. Applause may never come. Your voice may tremble. You might walk through the valley with dust on your feet, unseen and uncelebrated—but it still matters.
You may not feel like a prophet. But if you belong to Christ, then His Spirit lives in you—and the fire of His truth will not be snuffed out. That fire fuels your compassion. It stirs your heart when you see injustice. It moves you to speak truth when silence feels safer. And when you try to walk away from what He’s called you to do, it burns in your bones.

When You Want to Quit
Jeremiah didn’t sugarcoat his feelings. He told God he felt deceived, tricked into a role that hurt too much. His pain was real. But so was his faith. And it’s that faith—raw, battered, and honest—that ultimately testifies to the power of God’s presence in a weary soul.
So what do you do when you want to quit?
Bring your truth to God, honestly and without pretense.
Acknowledge the cost—it’s real, and it matters.
Let yourself sit with the ache instead of rushing past it.
Then trust that the fire He placed inside you will keep you moving, even if it’s only one small step at a time.
That fire is not fueled by your strength, but by His Spirit.
Prayer
Lord,
I’m tired.
I’ve tried to be faithful, but sometimes the cost feels too high. I’ve been discouraged. I’ve questioned whether it’s worth it. I’ve even thought about walking away from the calling You’ve placed in my life. But Your Word won’t let me go. It burns within me—reminding me of who You are and what You’ve done.
So today, I surrender again. Not with fanfare or bold declarations, but with quiet trust. Light the fire again, Lord. Stir the embers in my soul. Let me speak when You tell me to speak. Let me stay when You tell me to stay. And when I’m too weary to move, remind me that Your Spirit is the one carrying the flame.
I want to live with that fire in my bones. Even when it’s hard. Even when it’s quiet. Because You are worth it.
Amen.
